You just broke your personal record up the mountain. Thats great, but now when you are at it, you can break your personal best down the mountain too. I am going to teach you how to descent on a bike so you minimize the risk factor and you are able to bypass the cars
Ride on the drops. By riding on the drops you become much more aero and allows you to ride faster down the hill. You also have much better control over your bike, and the brakes are not far from your fingers which means that you can respond to unforeseen events faster.
2. Look Ahead
When you drive around the corner it is important for you to look ahead, not on your bike. Although it may be a shiny new bike look at the corner apex and focus on it through the whole corner. You go where you focus.
3. Outside Leg Straight
When you are in the corner push your whole weight on to the outside pedal, which should be in the six o`clock position. With this technique you will improve your grip, so you can cut the corner tighter and keep your bike on the shortest course through the corner.
4. Relax
I can`t stress this point enough. When you are descending it is important that you stay cool and relaxed. Not so relaxed that you fall of your bike, but a happy medium would be fine. When you tighten up in a corner, you will most likely lose control and just ride straight into the bypassing car. If you on the other side keep calm and carry on, you will be in full control and will be able to concentrate on your technique.
So, what do you do when you are about to descend from that mountain you just climbed?
You position yourself on the drops, then you look straight ahead while keeping calm, when your in the corner you press your outer leg toward the outer pedal to get that extra grip and last but not least you enjoy the speed.
Side Note: Know your limitations, take it slow at first and gradually build up your speed. Don't`t try to go 100km/h on your first rides.
